The Smart Choice

What Sets Fibreglass Apart From Other Pool Types

Fibreglass pools are a popular choice for Wollongong homeowners thanks to their durability, low maintenance, and energy efficiency. Unlike concrete or vinyl options, fibreglass pools resist cracking and leaking, making them ideal for areas with ground movement.

Their smooth, non-porous surface helps prevent algae growth, keeping your pool cleaner and safer with less effort. While concrete allows more customisation, today's fibreglass pools come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and colours to suit any backyard.

They're also energy efficient — excellent insulation reduces heating costs and water loss, making them a smart, sustainable option for year-round swimming.

Built to Last

Resists cracking and leaking even with ground movement — designed for Australian conditions.

Low Maintenance

Non-porous surface prevents algae build-up, meaning cleaner water with far less effort.

Energy Efficient

Superior insulation reduces heating costs and water loss for sustainable, year-round use.

Wide Range

Dozens of shapes, sizes, and colours — there's a perfect fibreglass pool for every yard.

Choosing Right

What to Look For in a Wollongong Pool Builder

01

Experience

Choose a builder with a strong history in pool construction to ensure your pool is built to Australian standards and built to last.

02

Reputation

Check reviews, testimonials, and ask for referrals to gauge the builder's reliability and customer satisfaction.

03

Materials

Make sure the builder uses high-quality materials suited to the Australian climate for better durability and lower maintenance.

04

Customer Service

Look for a builder who communicates clearly, responds promptly, and prioritises your needs throughout the project.

Enhance Your Pool

Our Top Choices to Add to Your Wollongong Fibreglass Pool

LED Lighting

LED lighting transforms your pool into a captivating evening retreat. With multiple colours and settings, it enhances the atmosphere for swimming or entertaining. Whether you prefer a soft glow or bold hues, LED lights provide energy-efficient, long-lasting illumination for a luxurious night swim.

Swim Jets

Swim jets create a steady current for resistance swimming in place. They provide a full-body workout that boosts strength, endurance, and technique. Ideal for small pools, swim jets turn any space into a low-impact training zone suitable for all fitness levels.

Pool Heating System

A pool heating system keeps water at a comfortable temperature year-round, making swimming enjoyable even in cooler months. It extends pool use across seasons, offering warmth and relaxation on crisp mornings or chilly evenings.

Saltwater Chlorinator

Saltwater chlorinators simplify pool maintenance by converting salt into chlorine, reducing harsh chemicals. They create a gentler, more comfortable swimming experience — ideal for sensitive skin and eyes.

Water Features

Waterfalls or fountains add elegance to your pool area, creating a tranquil atmosphere. Their soothing sounds enhance relaxation, comfort, and overall ambiance, making your outdoor space feel like a serene retreat.

Spa or Hot Tub

A spa or hot tub adds a relaxing retreat to your pool area. The warm, bubbling water offers hydrotherapy benefits — easing muscle tension, improving circulation, and supporting overall wellness. Ideal for unwinding after a swim or enjoying a quiet moment of calm.

Pool Covers

Pool covers keep your pool clean by blocking debris, reducing evaporation, and minimising chemical loss. They also improve safety by preventing accidental falls, protecting kids and pets. Plus, covers help conserve energy and lower maintenance costs over time.

In-Pool Cleaning System

An in-pool cleaning system clears debris, leaves, and dirt automatically, keeping water clean with little effort. It continuously circulates and filters the water, reducing manual cleaning and making pool maintenance easy and stress-free.

Know Before You Build

Pool Planning Laws in Wollongong

Installing a pool in Wollongong involves real legal requirements before a single shovel hits the ground. Click through each topic below to understand what's involved — and why having an experienced builder handle approvals makes all the difference.

Two Routes to Approval

Most Wollongong pools can be fast-tracked through a Complying Development Certificate. But if your block has constraints, a full Development Application may be required. Knowing which path applies before you start saves weeks of delay.

~20 days  |  DA: 40–100+ days
1

Complying Development Certificate

The fast-track option — typically approved within 20 days. Available when the pool waterline sits at least 1.0m from side and rear boundaries and the site meets standard zoning and slope requirements.

2

Development Application

Required for tight blocks, steep escarpment sites, or heritage-listed properties. Lodged with Wollongong City Council — can take 40–100+ days depending on complexity.

3

We handle this for you

Our team assesses your block upfront and manages the full approval process — so you're never left guessing which pathway applies or waiting on paperwork.

Wollongong-Specific Council Rules

Wollongong City Council's Development Control Plan includes controls specific to residential pools. These go beyond standard NSW rules — especially for properties on the Illawarra Escarpment or in bushfire-prone areas.

Applies to all Wollongong LGA properties
1

Privacy, noise & stormwater controls

Council's DCP covers privacy screening for elevated decks, noise limits for pool equipment near boundaries, and stormwater management — particularly relevant for sloping Illawarra Escarpment sites.

2

Bushfire Attack Level assessment

Properties in Thirroul, Bulli, Figtree, and Helensburgh may require a BAL assessment before a CDC can be issued. We identify this at the quoting stage so there are no surprises.

3

Sydney Water easements

Easements are common across the Illawarra region and can affect pool placement. We check for these before any design is finalised — avoiding costly repositioning later.

Mandatory Safety Fencing

Under NSW law, every pool must have a compliant child-resistant safety barrier — full stop. This is non-negotiable and one of the most scrutinised parts of any pool build. Getting it wrong means fines and forced rectification.

Non-negotiable NSW law requirement
1

Minimum internal fence height

Internal pool fencing must be at least 1.2m high. Any boundary fence used as part of the barrier must be 1.8m high on the pool side.

2

900mm Non-Climbable Zone

No trees, furniture, BBQs or retaining walls can provide a foothold within 900mm of the fence. This zone must stay clear at all times — not just at installation.

3

Self-closing, self-latching gates

All gate hardware must be self-closing and self-latching, opening away from the pool. Fines and court action apply if barriers are non-compliant or not maintained.

The NSW Swimming Pool Register

All NSW pools — including every pool installed in Wollongong — must be registered on the NSW Swimming Pool Register. Registration is free, but failure to register is a legal offence. It's also required before you can sell or lease your property.

Free registration — required by law
1

Register before or after installation

Registration involves completing a self-assessment checklist confirming your pool barrier meets Australian Standards. It must be completed before or immediately after installation.

2

Compliance certificate for sale or lease

Required before selling or leasing any property with a pool. Issued by Wollongong City Council or an accredited private certifier after a physical inspection of the pool barrier.

3

We manage the paperwork

As part of every installation, our team handles the NSW Pool Register submission and certification paperwork — you don't need to navigate this alone.

Your Ongoing Owner Obligations

Pool ownership in Wollongong comes with ongoing legal responsibilities — not just at installation, but for the life of the pool. Council can conduct unannounced inspections and issue notices at any time.

Applies for the lifetime of your pool
1

Keep the barrier in good repair

You must maintain the safety barrier at all times — no broken latches, sagging fences, or obstructions in the non-climbable zone. Council can inspect and issue notices for non-compliance.

2

Display a current CPR sign

A current CPR sign must be displayed near the pool at all times. Signs must meet Australian Standards — outdated versions are not compliant and will need to be replaced.

3

Modifications trigger full upgrade

If you substantially modify your pool barrier — replacing fencing, changing door or window access — the entire barrier must be upgraded to current Australian Standards, even if the original was approved under older rules.

We handle the approvals for you. As part of every Barrier Reef Pools installation, our team manages council approvals and certification paperwork — so you don't have to navigate the process alone. Call us on 1300 383 484 to discuss your block and what's involved.
